I had never heard of a dog or cat getting diabetes until my own Peanut was diagnosed. You can see her pictures on Dog funny site from the time she was a few days old, a few weeks old, and a few years old.
When she was about 8 years old she started having accidents in the house, right in front of me, I was outraged, why was she suddenly being a bad girl? I didn't realize she was trying to tell me that something was wrong. Then I noticed that she was having trouble seeing, I would toss her a treat and instead of catching it in the air like she normally did, the treat would hit the floor and she had a hard time finding it. I had a wonderful vet at the time who ran tests to find out how to regulate her and taught me how to give Peanut insulin shots. Over time her eyesight did get worse and eventually she couldn't go outside to run like she loved to do when she was younger. She started to become afraid of even going out on walks, she would do ok until she would have to cross a shadow, the shadow must of looked like a deep hole to her, she wouldn't cross them. Over the years as her eyesight got worse, she became more dependent on me and hated being alone. She would stand and cry and howl at the back door even when I would just go up to get the mail. In the house she would have to be touching me in some way to make sure I was right there with her, if she was napping and woke up she would start searching for me. She learned her way around the house very well as long as nothing was moved out of place, but even when things got rearranged she learned the new arrangement and adapted quickly.
That is one of the most precious gifts that she gave me, how well she adapted to any problem that came up for her and how she always kept her very loving disposition no matter how bad things seemed to me to be for her. Her strength and courage inspired me to kept a good attitude in the face of my own problems. She would even jump up in my lap every day to get her shot and give me kisses. She never gave me any problems with giving her, her shot. It was like she knew she needed it and happy to get it. She was always happy and full of joy. When ever I was sad about something she would cheer me up, you couldn't stay sad or in a bad mood with her there being so happy.
She passed away last June at almost 17 years old. I thought she had indigestion but it was a heart attack. I will always have the wonderful memories of her to remind me that no matter how bad things might seem we can still face our problems with a positive happy outlook that makes our problems disappear.
