Hunting Dogs are man's best friends. My Dad and Husband always had hunting dogs, English Setters, Britney Spaniels, Beagles, Weimaraners, short hair pointers. They were all great dogs, each one had it's own unique qualities. My favorite hunting dog had to be the English Setter. I can't think of anything more beautiful then to be out at dawn waking through green and golden fields beside some yellow corn field in the crisp fall air, the surrounding trees full of color. Just walking along, the setters with their noses to the ground weaving back and forth in front of us when one of them suddenly freezes with one leg in mid step. His body so tense he quivers and you know the hen bird is making a run for it but he is focused on the colorful ring neck pheasant standing his ground giving his mate a chance to get away. I can still hear daddy saying easy boy, easy boy, as we slowly walk toward him. When we get close enough daddy says OK! My beautiful dog leaps toward the pheasant that cackles and flies off to find his mate. Good boy! You did great! We all congratulate ourselves on a job well done. Happy Birthday dad and thanks for giving me the gift of learning why our best friends are hunting dogs.
